Every fifth bag of groceries goes to waste

Our attitude about food has dramatically changed since our grandparents' times. Decades of low prices and convenience food have seemingly contributed to a "throwaway" culture. On average we throw away about 20 percent of the food we purchase. In other words: every fifth bag of groceries we buy goes to waste.
For Germany this means 6,6 million tonnes of wasted food every year. Germans on average pay for, but do not eat 25 billion Euro worth of food every year.

Part of the problem lies in the fact that most consumers strongly underestimate the amount of food they throw away. Many are convinced that they don't waste any food at all, yet at 80 kg in Germany we actually each throw away roughly our own body weight in food every year.

To raise awareness on the issue and encourage consumers to act more consciously when it comes to food, Cofresco has started the pan-European SAVE FOOD initiative with its brands Toppits^® and Albal^®. The initiative aims to support consumers in their effort to save more food and decrease their food waste by offering practical advice and clever solutions.
