Bio-based and biodegradable plastics - beacon of hope or greenwashing?

05/07/2025

Whether as packaging, bags or disposable products - we are encountering bio-based and biodegradable plastics more and more frequently. But how environmentally friendly are they really? Our article shows what opportunities they offer, where their limits lie and what misunderstandings exist.

Bio-based = biodegradable?
A plastic can be made from corn or sugar cane, for example, but behave in the same way in the environment as a fossil-based plastic.

Life cycle assessment - better for the climate?
Although bio-based plastics often have a better carbon footprint, they have other ecological effects: greater competition for land, eutrophication potential or acidification.

Energy packaging: More appearance than reality?
Biodegradable disposable products often suggest that they are environmentally friendly - but the benefits are limited.
