Wishful thinking and reality: webinar on the potential of biobased and biodegradable materials
In 2020, the German adhesives company Henkel will once again be offering a series of free webinars on the topics of sustainability, the circular economy and food safety. Experts from the company will be providing insights into their current projects and activities.
One of the highlights of the series will be the webinar “Biobased and Biodegradable - Perception and True Potential”, which will be available on 2 April 2020 at 9 am and 5 pm.
The webinar will be hosted by Dr. Dennis Bankmann and Marcin Lapaj, both Global Business Development Managers for the Circular Economy at Henkel. The event will feature a detailed insight into the basics of biobased and biodegradable materials. The focus will be on defining biobased materials and on explaining the difference between composting, anaerobic fermentation and biodegradation. In a discussion with the webinar hosts, the potential of the new materials will be highlighted and further questions discussed.
Those wishing to take part in the free webinar must register at least 60 minutes in advance via the website.

Plastics Centre hosts specialist conference on composite barrier films
31 March to 1 April 2020, Würzburg, Germany
Every two years, the Plastics Centre (Kunststoffzentrum – SKZ) in Würzburg, Germany, hosts its conference on composite barrier films. The event, which is organised in cooperation with INNOFORM, is aimed at industry specialists along the packaging supply chain in the field of production, purchasing, sales and development and aims to highlight the progress made in research and application over the past two years.
As at the previous event, the focus will once again be on the packaging market and include both technological and material-specific aspects.
A wide range of issues can therefore be expected at the symposium: such as the current status of standard properties for commercial barrier films, the demands placed on multilayer barrier films by the new packaging law, the further development of the mono-material trend and the prospects for adhesive-based composites.
The main topic of the two-day event, however, will be the fundamental question for all composite barrier films: Can the desired increase in recyclability and performance be achieved simultaneously, or are the two objectives mutually exclusive? In other words: Is the current development status sufficient to guarantee both recyclability and product protection? Or do packaging films with high barriers in particular have to provide new additional features, such as supporting maturing processes, absorbing gases and offering antibacterial properties?

Packaging as part of a circular economy
23 to 25 March 2020, Brussels, Belgium
The 26th Packaging Waste & Sustainability Forum in Brussels in late March will centre on the relationship between packaging and recycling management. Experts from administrative bodies, associations and companies will be discussing the effects of new EU waste and recycling legislation on packaging and packaging waste as well as presenting some of their own solutions.
Over the course of the three-day conference, participants will discuss industry’s commitment to the circular economy with regard to packaging, as well as the question of how to accelerate progress towards a more sustainable approach. Possibilities to increase the proportion of recycled plastic in packaging in a competitive and viable way will also be presented. A topic that goes hand in hand with the development and introduction of new collection models, sorting approaches and product labelling. The conference agenda is rounded off with an examination and evaluation of various packaging materials with regard to their usability and reusability.
